I had to do this to get the factory oil filter off my motorcycle. Went through 3 different oil filter removal tools and all I achieved was rounding off all the edges of the filter.

Retailers do it because they pay a penalty when a chargeback happens and payment processors will cut ties with them if their fraud rate is too high.

If the APIs are meant for public consumption, requiring feature parity makes a lot of sense. But when it’s for internal use by your own developers, waiting means you are making a bunch of new API endpoints no one will ever use. People will write more and more code using the older endpoints and those endpoints will start getting changes that your new ones will need ported over.

I think if you are going to force people to use new endpoints, you’ll need them to either write the endpoints themselves or have a team member who can write it for them and account for this while planning. If getting a new endpoint requires putting in a JIRA ticket with a separate backend team, 4 planning meetings, and a month wait, people are just going to stick with what currently exists.

It was basically the same thing. In the code base, there was only v3 and v4. I never bothered to check what happened to v1 and v2, but I suspect they were used in an older, archived code base.

In my experience, having to write new v2 (or in my case v4) endpoints for most new features was expected.

In the US, people consider any public sector job to be working in/for the government. Judges, Legislators, the president, TSA security, Park Rangers, Cops, Clerks at the driver’s license office, etc. would all be considered government roles. Sometimes you need to clarify if you mean federal government or state government.

The president, his staff, and his political appointees are called the administration.

I imagine the people who actually think about how they are working just for basic needs are mostly a different group of people than those yelling about freedom.

I don’t know how many conservatives wake up in the morning with the feeling that everything they do is just to make some rich guy richer until they eventually die. Because why would they be a conservative at that point?

It’s not that your nose can’t taste very much. It’s like the other three, eating a nose won’t taste very good.

You’re supposed to get to the nose and think about how it definitely wouldn’t taste good. Then you think about how it doesn’t really smell that much better than you imagine it would taste. Seems a few people have gotten that confused. Article spent too much time rehashing the change in 15.0 before getting to 15.1 and felt like a typical ragebait article.

Still seems a little ragebaity, they don’t really have a lot of proof that Apple has intentionally disabled running unsigned apps. Their argument is that Apple changed the process for running in 15.0 and an app won’t start in 15.1, therefore the end of the era of sideloading. Personally, I would’ve liked more details on that part and less on history of 15.0.

There is a Mac app called Rewind that came out a couple of years ago that does the same thing. There was also an open source thing for Windows. Everyone is desperate to show that they are hip and can do AI. It looks like someone at Microsoft saw a demo of one of those apps and thought that putting it into Windows would let them brag about how much AI Windows can do. They clearly tried to rush it out in time for their Copilot PC marketing push.

The idea is that you can use local LLM models and image scanning to talk to your computer. You could ask it to summarize your day, ask what you were working on last week, or find those articles you vaguely remember reading last year and can’t find anymore. I can almost see the merit, but the security risk is so high.

I wonder if people will eventually stop caring about the security risk of features like this. Those AI girlfriends some people dream about will have access to so much private information. Give this thing a voice and you can market it as a companion who learns the things you like and can talk with you about the things you are reading. Hackers might be able to see literally everything you’ve done on the computer for the last few years, but you’ll get to feel like Iron Man with your own personal Jarvis.

It can still be turned on or off, they are just saying it wasn’t supposed to be on that particular screen.

My guess is that it was there as a temporary way to turn it on and off during development before they had a page in settings.

I was specific about my wording. I didn’t say an admin did the ban. I said the ban mentions that a site admin was responsible.

The mod was either also an admin or asked an admin. You can even see it in the ban reasons from OP. The most recent ban mentions that a site admin is responsible for the ban.

By the comments I’ve seen, it seems like no one read their previous announcement where they said they were delaying the feature while they continued work on it. We already knew they were still going to ship it.

Just having it disabled by default is a massive improvement. It’s crazy that they initially considered releasing it with no encryption and it on by default.

The judge’s argument is that Tesla, which he owns stock in, isn’t a party in the suit against Media Matters, just X. It’s a pretty stupid argument, but he wouldn’t be able to hurt Media Matters if he recused himself.

This is the judge who ruled that Google has a monopoly and abused it. If Google is paying them, they didn’t pay enough.
