  • can’t speak for OP but the only beef I have with wayland is discord. If i’m in voice comms it will ONLY work if I’m either in a game or my discord is focused. if I’m in my web browser or doing something else like in an IDE or terminal etc then voice doesn’t work. It’s annoying.

If anyone has a workaround for that I’d love to hear it. on x11 never had these issues but I can’t use x11 as my primary machine is a hybrid nvidia and amd gpu laptop so no gaming on x11.

  • when I first switched to linux I used mint for all of two weeks, was an awful experience and almost made me go back to windows until someone told me to try cachyos instead.

I haven’t used Mint since but I might install it on my VM to give it another crack since likely it was personal user error that made it awful for me. Just had constant issues with my nvidia gpu.

  • I’d cut this up into separate posts in all honesty as it’s one massive info dump and could be extremely imitating to someone looking to try linux for the first time. I think you focused too much on why to switch and not exactly HOW to switch.

Maybe just focus on one distro also. Yes there are a lot of choices but there’s no harm on rolling with one distro for a couple weeks until you get your legs under you and then feel free to hop around.

  • rozodru@pie.andmc.catoTechnology@lemmy.worldIs Kagi search engine worth it?

I tried it, paid for it, cancelled it. I tested it with the same queries with ddg, startpage, brave, and qwant via 4get. The results were essentially the same. Kagi did provide more context in the description of the results but it wasn’t anything I would pay a premium for. the majority of features I just didn’t use, the assistant and fastgpt were a waste, lenses were fine and having fediverse on by default is neat but nothing I’d call home about.

If it were cheaper sure, I might stick with it but I can’t justify the price to anyone wanting to use a search engine. $5 for 300 searches a month is a joke. I also don’t like the fact that if you want to pay with something other than a credit card (paypal, venmo, etc) you get charged extra cause Kagi doesn’t want to eat the fees. Also there’s zero option to opt out of paying for the “AI” features, you can turn them off sure…but you’re still going to pay for them.

If your internet usage consists of constant searching and LLM use for searching then sure, you’re going to be paying $10+ a month and be happy with it. But there was nothing Kagi offered that knocked my socks off. if anything, felt like I was getting scammed.

  • Up until a few weeks ago I was running my own private SearXNG instance and it’s not just you, even I noticed on my OWN instance that it had progressively gotten worse. Initially it was great so I just left it be but then the performance and results just became horrible. It was hit or miss if the thing would even load or not when other instances on my server like my akkoma, piefed, redlib, forgejo, etc all ran smooth as silk.

Eventually I ditched SearXNG and switched to 4get which much better and faster results. thing never goes down and the search results have been fantastic.

  • honestly it’s better to just host your own private instance as if you want a lemmy and mastodon instance that others can also set up you not only have to admin it you also have to moderate it.

Also keep in mind it’s NOT just actual people signing up but you also have to deal with all the bots which WILL register en masse to your instances. a lot of people won’t mention this. bots flock to this stuff like flies on shit. It’s not worth it unless you plan on really dedicating the time to actively admin your instances.

I run Akkoma instead of Mastodon and Piefed instead of lemmy. both of which were easier to setup than mastodon/lemmy and less resource heavy.

  • The Application is the easiest part to build out of all of this. that’s not an issue at all. How are you going to ensure that A. Restaurants are going to want to work with you B. how are you going to get drivers to want to work for you C. how are you going to ensure that food will be safe once it leaves a restaurant until it gets to a customers door D. how are you going to ensure that everyone involved in this process gets paid.

Whose on the hook if the driver decides to eat the food that they pick up? How do you refund the customer? do you pay the Restaurant? etc, etc, etc

  • I honestly can’t stand GNOME and I’ve given it several tries to try and either appreciate it or understand why others adore it. I don’t get it. Like ok I want to open an application launcher or simply see my dock. default click on those odd looking buttons that represent your workspaces but also is your launcher/dock view? ok…I just want to open firefox why do I have to see an overview of my workspaces? I don’t care about that I just want to open firefox. How come I can’t customize it easily? why do I need to download extensions via my web browser to do so? ok time to upgrade GNOME…wait why are ALL my extensions now broken? Let me go to the GNOME forums or discord to get help…wait why am I getting chewed out by the devs for wanting to customize my GNOME experience? ok I’m going back to KDE.

KDE has also improved A LOT in the past year. it’s a damn solid DE now. I primarily use Niri on my NixOS machine but I do have KDE installed also because every now and again I like going back to it to play around with and honestly…I’m starting to prefer Konsole over other terminals.

  • As someone who witnessed them eating up ALL their competition first hand, you’re right. They bought EVERYONE out. in my time in the adult industry I worked for 3 separate companies and Manwin bought them all. TWICE I was offered a job by them and to move to Montreal after being laid off from two companies that they bought and both times I turned them down simply because of their reputation within the industry.

One company I worked for was named Twistys/Pink Visual based in Toronto and they were bought by Manwin. A few people I know decided to move to Montreal to work at pornhub since they worked on Gaytube, SexTube, TrannyTube, etc and would be in charge of those sites at pornhub. They all moved back to Toronto within the spawn of a few months because it was a horrible place to work. Pornhub has always presented itself online as cool and hip to modern trends but behind the scenes it’s anything but. I mean all the cool statistics and stuff they constantly present was built on the back of a guy from Tucson Arizona that worked for another porn company there that they bought. They promptly fired him after he essentially taught them his tools. Dude moved to Montreal from Arizona and everything. uprooted his family to move to Canada. He lasted maybe a year.

There was also a point where the adult actors were looking to unionize. It was largely spear headed by Sasha Grey. Manwin/Pornhub in part was very quick to squash that.

  • as someone who used to work in the adult entertainment industry years and years ago Manwin/Pornhub was always known as the “McDonalds of Porn”. You go there because you don’t know any better and just want a quick session.

If you want niche stuff, truly amateur stuff, you’ll go else where. So you’re not wrong, there are a lot more places that simply ignore these rules. For the vast majority as long as they’re following 2257 rules they couldn’t give a rats ass about any other countries rules. Why? because most of the big payment processors i.e. places like CCBill, are in the US so it’s more important to play by the US’ rules than anywhere else so Affiliates and what have you can continue to be paid.
