  • I think he truly deeply wants to go to Mars. It’s his dream. His one mission. His destiny. I think he actually believes he is the only person that will be able to get people there. In his head, he’s space Jesus. Everyone else is an NPC. He sees government, the left, regulations, workers rights every thing as a barrier for him to move along on his goal. He’s breaking everything appart to build himself a runway. He’s doing one last grift, one last pump and dump to say goodbye and take off. He doesn’t care if the US doesn’t exist in 50 years since he will be off planet.

  • I personally don’t really like that analogy. With email, you can send and email to anyone who has an email address. You can only see emails you have received after creating your email account. It’s simple and clear. With the fediverse, for past posts, you can see some: only if it was posted on your instance or if someone on your instance was following them when it was originally posted or has interacted with it since, meaning there is some technicality that prevents you from seeing everything you think you should be able to see.

In terms of account creation, I agree. Just pick a provider (instance), if you don’t like it you can create a new account somewhere else later.

  • The beauty of the civil rights movement was that on the one side you had the peaceful protests, the disobedience pointing at the other side where activists wanting the same thing and more weren’t so peaceful. The peaceful protesters were the compromise. The alternative was a black revolution, the black panthers, Malcom X etc.

Even those who don’t want a full French Revolution right now should at least push for peaceful protest. We need this “or else” approach. We shouldn’t let it go to waste.

  • Alright everyone, thank you so much for your thoughtful recommendations! To sum it up, here’s what I have done:

    • I used let’s encrypt’s Certbot to get my SSL certs and setup https, auto-renew every 3 months and I setup a reminder to update Certbot every month.
    • I setup a permanent redirect from http to https in Apache
    • I installed a firewall on the Pi, only 80, 443 and [22 from my computer to the RPi] are open. I couldn’t find the firewall settings on my router but I assume they exist since I had to forward 80 and 443 there.
    • installed the following plugins: WordFence and WP Fail2Ban
    • changed the user password on the pi to a better longer one

    I think I should be all set, shouldn’t I?
