  • The problem with copyright/data ownership is that it’s useless if you’re unable to enforce it. Data is replicable, doesn’t matter if you call it “work” or “ideas”. Do you think you own the text you just wrote? Let me show you something.

    Spoiler

We aren’t talking about “ideas” being stolen here, we’re talking about work being stolen and exploited for corporate profit.

Personally I don’t think it’s crazy to suggest that the person who writes a book should own it, the people who compose a song should own it, the artists who paints a painting should own it, etc.

As much as techbros love to pretend that AI is ushering us into a post-capitalist, post-copyright Star Trek future, it is actually in fact doing the exact opposite–it’s empowering the biggest and richest tech companies to exploit human creativity in the largest industrial plagiarism scheme in history, all so some bullshit VC investors can gain their way up the pyramid scheme known as the stock market.

There. I just stole your text. I stole it. I own it now. It’s mine now. What are you gonna do about it?

Instead there is no stealing when it comes to information, there’s only replication, there’s only copying.

I agree with you, corpos shouldn’t have this amount of power. But you won’t get there by trying to protect the work of artists writers etc with the exact same scheme corpos pulled to protect their power and interests. Like, it didn’t work, did it? No copyright for me, thanks

  • SteamOS will most likely be deployed on other handheld PCs, not desktop PCs. The handheld PCs that came out in response to the deck’s release (or before) usually run Windows.

Android is not bad because Android itself is bad (well… it kinda is but let’s just assume it isn’t), but because the phone manufacturers lock down their phones’ hardware. They do this to force you into their ecosystem. With SteamOS, you already have an ecosystem, which is Steam. There is (at least for now) a clear distinction between Hardware manufacturer and software provider.

For now at least Androidization is nothing you should worry about. Maybe in 10, 20 years. edit: and even then it’s never going to be as bad as with the smartphones

  • So this is interesting… My favorite of the definitions of “opinion” I found is

belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge

Because I was about to say that it’s impossible not to have an opinion, which might not be entirely correct.

In DBT we were told that there are helpful, consequential and inconsequential ehm… evaluations? Assessments? Judgments? I don’t know the exact translation. Anyway, an important thing I realized then was that opinions/values etc are not something you form consciously, they just kinda pop up in your head and change shapes depending on what you learn and experience. You are able to detach from your opinions, look at them from the outside.

edit: so what I ultimately wanted to tell you is that you can do this detachment thing with other people’s opinions as well.
