  • No. I daily a Galaxy S23. I really like it except for all of Samsungs preinstalled apps that can’t be deleted.

A couple months back, I bought a refurbished OnePlus 6T (2018) to mess around with Linux and de-Googled Android, and guess what, my phone which is 5 years newer feels virtually no different. It does have a better camera, granted, but personally that doesn’t effect me as I do any serious photography with a proper camera anyway (also, I have to acknowledge that the 6T is slower as it’s not really a flagship phone like the S23, but the 6T feels comparable quality and performance wise to some mid range 2024 phones I’ve used).

Bottom line, unless we see more Apple M-style chipsets in phones, imo, we’re at a plateau. You could get a $200 5 year old phone and be fine.

  • All I want on this Earth is a FOSS alternative to Niagara launcher. I love a simple icon/list launcher but Niagaras permission requirements are unsettling. Kvaesitso is great, and easily the most polished FOSS launcher I’ve used, but just doesn’t quite hit that mark for me. The closest I’ve found is Plasma Mobile, but I don’t feel like setting up halium just for a launcher.

  • Pine64, the company that has made such excellent projects as the PinePhone, PineBook, and PineTime(open source hardware and software smartphone, laptop and smart watch), has stated that one of their dream projects would be an open source, hackable printer. There’s obviously a ton of logistics though and it will likely never materialize unless they really start making big bucks.

  • I was on a GTX1080 for a long time. Nothing absolutely dealbreaking, but lots of small naggling issues that took lots of annoying troubleshooting to fix. Plus, abysmal DX12 performance (which is a limitation of the cards Pascal architecture as far as I know, not everyone experiences it but it’s common enough).

Switched to an RX 7600XT and wow. Night and day. Zero configuration, zero weird issues, games perform fantastic at high settings (CP2077 at 1440p/High settings across the board is a pretty stable 80+ FPS, compared to 50fps at low and medium and 1080p with the old card, even on Windows). Complete gamechanger.

  • That’s potentially my biggest issue woth Windows. You aren’t actually made to understand what went wrong. Linux will give you lots of information. It can be overwhelming if you’re just used to seeing “This app stopped working, wait or close it?”, but once you’re used to it, you realize that info usually give you all the tools you need to fix your problem.
