  • Nobody is judging you anymore. You’re free to live how you want to. Most people struggle to find a balance between working and life. So you’re not alone there.

I met this traveling nurse who spends fall, winter and spring working, and then spends summer traveling and hiking in the mountains. I met a teacher who does the same. There are many seasonal workers who put in a lot of work in a burst and then take time to themselves - firefighters, wine grape harvest, ski lift/resort.

Keep an open mind, and live simply. Keep few possessions which add a lot of value to your life. Think of what you want to do, then figure out how to get there. At least then if you are working a boring job, it is moving you toward your own goal.

  • I have two TP-Link EAP610, one EAP245, and one EAP615-Wall. The Omada controller runs on my home server in an LXC. Three of the units are powered by PoE, and the garage one is meshed in. I needed three in my house because the walls have chicken wire in them which blocks and reflects WiFi. It took some trail and error to get the WAPs in suitable locations. The main one in the basement is under a wall, such that it has line of sight into 5 rooms of the house. I used iPerf to test performance at the edges of each room, until I could get at least 300 Mbit reliably. That was the only way I could ensure that I was getting a direct signal and not a reflection off a wall.

  • Over 20 years ago, I met my future wife on a bus. There was a fare dispute and the bus got pulled over by the police for like an hour, giving us time to talk.

When I graduated college my mom apparently passed my resume around to everyone, and her diving instructor gave it to a friend who gave it to a coworker who decided to give me an interview. I’m still in a career that started with the most random of connections.

A couple years ago, my mom discovered from my DNA test that she had assumed my father incorrectly based on the gestation timeline estimated by the doctor. She told me my real dad’s name, and I have met him and learned of new siblings, cousins, uncles, and grandmother. Whoops.

Sometimes the most random of events has lifelong consequences.
