  • Duels? No clue, honestly. They definitely happened, but their frequency could definitely be overstated. As for meeting at noon? I think it sounds like the most reasonable time and would’ve been common if duels were common. This is pure, complete speculation on my part, so don’t repeat it without doing your own research, but I think the existing facts support my conclusion:

    • Home clocks at the time were only seen among rich folks, often as a status symbol.
    • Even if you did have one of these, they often lost quite a few minutes per day.
    • Towns often had a clock for the church.
    • This clock would’ve been more accurate than a home clock.
    • This clock often rang at noon.
    • Noon is (approximately) pretty easily verifiable by the position of the Sun being the highest in the sky.
    • Noon means that neither party should have an advantage based on where the Sun is facing if you line up east–west.
    • Noon is around a time most people are most likely to be the most awake.

Or you know… it just means no updates and we’ll all probably be fine.

Dude, I would be hesitant to use an OS more than a month after EOL. I hope you realize that your OS no longer receiving security updates is a really, really, really bad thing. People staying on Win10 instead of upgrading to Linux or macOS or downgrading to Win11 is going to be zero day heaven.

  • The great thing about RISC-V if you care about sovereignty in an age where CPUs run the world is that it’s an open standard. Contrast this with x86 which is owned in some part by US-based Intel and some part by US-based AMD as well as ARM which is owned by Japanese-owned, UK-based Arm Holdings. If you want to use x86, you’re shelling out license money to Intel and AMD, and if you want to use ARM, you’re shelling out license money to Arm Holdings. You never truly “own” what you’re producing.

  • Correct, you’re not required to swear on the Internet. That’s why there are a trillion other words to use if you’re not comfortable with it. “This kind of stupid packing foam.” “This kind of annoying packing foam.” “This kind of obnoxious packing foam.” If you want to say “fucking”, then you can just say “This kind of fucking packing foam.” The censorship is useless and distracting. Commit to the word you want to say or use another word; nobody’s going to punish you for swearsies here, and nobody’s going to punish you for not swearsies.
