Basically a person being paid to fight in a war in a foreign country without being part of the military. I immediately thought of the Chinese mercenaries fighting in Ukraine for Russia. In many countries, becoming a mercenary is highly illegal, here in Germany it could even cost you your citizenship.
the screen either gets a line in it where the fold is or delaminates.
Delamination is the factory installed screen protector, which can be replaced, not the screen itself.
I’ve been using a Flip 4 for the past 2 years now. It’s great having a phone that can easily fit in my pants’ pockets. The fragility thing is overblown IMO. I take it with me on hikes and mountainbike tours. The screen is still pristine. Only the factory-installed screen protector started showing some hairline cracks along the crease a few months ago, so I just replaced it. Not getting a slab phone again if I can help it.
My parents were not that much younger when I was born. FWIW I’m happy to exist and had a good childhood. My dad died when I was 29, which was tough of course, but he was still there for me until I “stood on my own 2 feet”.
QWERTZ, which is just the standard layout for Germany. It switches out Y and Z, adds Umlauts and changes the positions of various special characters.
I’m curious, what made you switch to AZERTY?
I’d say yes, as long as they’re tolerant of their children questioning those beliefs and developing their own later on in life. Parents will always make an impression on their kids, that’s just what being a parent is. It can get more nuanced of course. Teaching your kids homophobia is unethical, but that’s regardless of whether it’s for religious or other reasons.
There were many events over the last few years that brought us closer to a potential WW3, but I don’t think the market crash will play a major role in that regard, no.
The jobs you list would definitely not fall under the common definition of unskilled labor. Most of them are trades.
Aside from London (where I didn’t really talk to anyone but my sister who lives there), I spent 2 weeks traveling solo by train around England, staying in Bath, Shrewsbury, York and Scarborough and visiting some of the surrounding towns and villages. I’m sure it helped that it’s a country where I have a good grasp of the local language unlike, say, Italy, where I could barely make myself understood. But I had lots of random friendly conversations with strangers in the UK and no negative experiences at all. Way more friendly than the average German for sure.
Big-city people are generally less friendly, so I do believe you that it’s a different matter for London. It’s the same for e.g. Tokyo, where people are way more cold than in the rest of Japan. And I guess you get a different perspective as a local than as a visitor. Several people in this thread have mentioned Germany, which does surprise me as a German.
Japan, China and the UK were the friendliest I’ve been so far. I’m German.
No, it’s obviously the Matrix out to get you. /s
You asked a bad faith question, using a derogatory slur no less.
Funny you’d say that, as we actually get what we call “Nosferatu spiders” in Germany quite often in our house. I don’t really mind them though, the occasional mosquito is much more annoying. We have nets on some of the windows though.
Basically keeping all the windows open through the night and closing them in the morning. I also sleep upstairs directly below the roof during the colder months, but move to the ground floor in summer, where it gets much less hot.
I’m surprised you see a ton of that on lemmy.world, always found that instance rather tame and moderate, at least by lemmy standards. Certainly compared to Hexbear, ml and Lemmygrad. Are you sure those weren’t federated posts from those instances? Anyway, lemm.ee is pretty neutral, lemmy.dbzer0.com leans more anarchist. But you could also just stay on .world and subscribe to communities that align with your views on whatever instance. Unless you have an issue with the moderation on .world specifically, it doesn’t really matter.
Flue shoots are kind of free for all in my country (Germany), even if people are vaccinated and they also get refreshed every so often by the real thing (right now we have a flue wave in children) - is there a reason why there is a difference between flue shoots and covid shoots?
Technically, there isn’t. The flu vaccine is also only recommended for older people and people with chronic illnesses. It’s true though that it’s easier to get the flu shot than the Covid shot outside of the official recommendation. I’m not sure why that’s the case.
From the individual point of view, is there any reason not to get a covid shoot, especially when the person already got vaccinated in the past?
If you’ve had your 3 shots and had Covid semi-recently, there probably just isn’t much of a benefit to getting it. I personally decided to get a fourth shot, due to never having had Covid and I was planning to go on a longer trip where I didn’t want to get sick. But I never bothered getting a 5th or 6th.
Is the benefits of further vaccinations vs. the risks a monetary/effort evaluation or a medical one?
I’d say medical, as the state is actually losing money right now, with many doses expiring due to low demand.
WHO does recommend the vaccine (2 doses for mRNA) for all adults. In Germany, 3 doses are recommended. As for not recommending further doses every year, it takes into consideration the benefits of further vaccinations vs the risks. There’s also the assumption that people will get Covid even after their initial vaccinations, so their immunity gets “refreshed” that way as well.
I can imagine. Switzerland is in many ways in quite a unique, privileged position in Europe. I’ve gotten job offers in Switzerland but personally, I don’t really mesh with its culture. If I ever move away, I think it’ll either be somewhere like The Netherlands, or even a lot further away, like New Zealand or Japan.
