I’m in an area that cools down at night so i use that as much as possible:

Once daytime temps drop below indoor temps (usually late evening) i open all windows and arrange a couple fans and run them on low all night. My goal is to move all of the hot air out of the apartment and replace it with cool outdoor air.

In the morning, ideally just before sunrise, i draw most/all curtains, shutter blinds, close windows, and turn off all excess lights. During the day i keep everything closed and the air still, and use as few lights as i can manage.

I can generally maintain about 15 degrees (f) cooler indoors with this technique. I currently live on the third floor which is working against me; this was much more effective (20-25 degrees) when i lived on the ground floor.

If i leave the windows open it or worse forget to draw the blinds it gets much warmer indoors than outside. I think my building must have pretty mediocre insulation and my windows are all single-pane.

Less than some. The US gov has a history of forcing US-based corporations to disclose private data regardless of their policies or the law.

I can’t give you a good alternative though. I’m sure the same thing happens in many countries

It’s a messaging app, it’s useless if there is nobody to message. I dont have any friends using signal yet.

Also it doesnt work on my phone (Ubuntu touch). There used to be a community app but it’s not currently working.

I sincerely wish them success, but it’s hard to have faith that a US-based company will actually protect your privacy. Not that Telegram does either. I dont know what information they do even collect.

Nothing new here. E2E is only available in one on one chats and is disabled by default. Dont use Telegram if privacy is your main concern.

At least it has an open-source client. Very few messaging platforms can say that, and fewer have a decent UX.

It’s not perfect, but it’s got a good combination of features and multi-platform availability. None of the other messaging apps support all of my devices except Matrix, and Matrix doesn’t have stickers

Edit: Signal doesn’t support all my devices but maybe someday! The network effect is also big. None of my family and friends are on Signal, but most have Telegram. A few have Matrix.

Also Signal is a US-based company.

With mushrooms i often rely on other citizen scientists rather than the ID robot. There are some very friendly and active mycologists who can be a big help figuring out an ID or telling you what to photograph next time to get better data

i upload photos i take of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, fungi, and bugs. The observations (photos + location + annotation) are uploaded to a public database accessible to researchers and universities.

I’ve been involved in multiple species range expansions, and i’ve documented both endangered and invasive species. Pretty fun!

The Android app is very good. The iOS app is good for uploads, but lacks a lot of browsing features like search filters and phylogenetic trees. If you are on iOS i suggest using it in a browser except for observation uploads

You can also upload audio recordings for bird and bug sounds. It’s amazing what you can learn about your local ecosystem!

Looking at RHEL docs it seems to also work there. The same instructions probably work in Fedora but idk I’ve never done it myself

I think the traditional way to do that is via dm-crypt, which you can set up with an ssh server.

You can also use a network-shared file rather than a password for LUKS but it’s not as straightforward to set up as a password. If you are doing something like tailscale then it’d be unlocked as long as you are on the VPN

Typing in a password in-person at a data center would be a huge hassle, agreed

I’m happy with regular password FDE, i think i’m more likely to encounter hardware failure (and then need to read the drive from another machine) than theft of the drive.

I believe you, but my experience is the opposite. Generally wifi doesnt work ootb on Windows for systems i’ve set up, and newer games are crashy until you install the latest chipset drivers. The drivers Windows installs seem to be many versions back and have been unstable IME

on Ubuntu or Fedora i’ve not had a single issue in over a decade. Not one time has a component not worked for me on the first boot. It’s been truly flawless. Games work at full performance right away.
