  • I see it as an extension of the myth of American purity and external corruption. “This person is evil, some outside power must have compromising info on them.” “Immigrants are violent criminals preying on innocent americans.”

These attitudes ignore the reality that bad people can come from anywhere. There are plenty of villians with very mundane origin stories. What matters is if everyone else has the will and ability to keep bad people in check and hold them accountable.

The grifters in charge need no other motivation than a sense of superiority and an opportunity to make a buck.

  • What components did they replace with the original work? Did they just replace the bumper cover?

If you were charged for a new tail lamp/light assembly in the previous work, then this is on them. If they only pulled the original tail lamp as part of other work, and reinstalled the original tail lamp, then the tail lamp was probably cracked in the collision. That damage would be easy to miss and can take a long time to become apparant. It sounds to me like this component was not replaced in the original work and you are only now discovering damage that was sustained in the collision.

  • My county offers compost from yard waste for $7 per loader scoop. You have to haul it yourself on the handful of weekends it’s open, but it’s a way better deal than buying from any of the landscape suppliers. Similar programs aren’t quite ubiquitous but they’re more common than most would realize. If your city has leaf collection, you should see if they offer compost.

I built some large raised beds that would have been a fortune to fill with bagged soil or from a landscape supplier. So I was really happy to find out about my local program.

  • You can test drive a payment level while watching the market. Pick the price bracket that you think might be your max and calculate the payment. Then set up an automatic recurring transfer from your checking to a savings account for the amount of the theoretical house payement with escrow - current rent. This will help you see if you can manage a higher payment or if you will feel too house poor. Those savings transfers can be earmarked for the downpayment too.

When figuring out how much of a downpayment you can afford, don’t forget to reserve money for closing costs which can be thousands of dollars. You will also need to reserve some emergency funds, and expect to buy a significant number of tools in the first few years. Yard care tools, ladders, etc. really add up.

If you look at places that need a little work, do your best to arrange to have all that work done before you move in. For example I wish we had our floors refinished before we moved in. To do that now would be a lot like moving twice.
