Your intel core7 has an iGPU which is what QuickSync is. Its one of the best for transcoding. Even without hardware acceleration the Intel CPU will handle this workload just fine but most of these Chinese mini PCs have ARM chips which won’t come with these benefits.

Edit: I see these Miniforum PCs do have Intel and AMD chips so I was making an incorrect assumption here.

  • That might really limit your options as Quicksync is pretty much the gold standard for efficiency and performance. A discrete GPU works too but you might have trouble finding them in a Chinese mini PC.

I used AMD for years (RX580) but it wasn’t always the best quality and having a separate GPU really sapped a lot more power. I don’t believe ARM processors are really optimized for transcoding either. Under the hood, Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex all use ffmpeg to do their transcoding so maybe you can research more about its performance with each platform.

Again, used is always an option. You’re not giving money to any of these companies by buying used parts and it sounds like this would get you more ‘horsepower’ from your budget than buying a bunch of new stuff.

  • For Frigate you can just add a Coral TPU to offload the heavy lifting but with Jellyfin you’ll likely need a GPU/iGPU (Intel) that can handle transcoding. I don’t know what specific models you’re looking at but you might try to determine their passmark score. I think it’s recommended at least 2000 score for a single 1080p transcode. Alternatively you can stick to specific file formats that won’t need transcoding but this might be some work.

You could get a used Dell Optiplex micro. They have i3/i5 processors and can be found for around $100. This will at least get you going and you can always build something later.

  • I used to point this out about Hulu probably close to a decade ago on reddit and would get endless comments about how “it’s just a few shows,” “i never see any ads,” and “it’s not their fault.” I wonder if those same people exist here.

There’s literally nothing compelling these shitty companies to advertise these plans as ad free when they do in fact contain ads. Just like cellular ISPs have no legitimate reason to call their data plans “unlimited” when they cap you after using a predefined amount of data.

  • My take is that your $5 or whatever isn’t going to really make a difference either way in the grand scheme of things because this issue is systemic and you can’t fix systemic issues as an individual taking a small action.

We have an insanely large issue with meth and heroin addiction where I live and so I’ve become quite jaded on the issue after seeing the results of it for so long. I’d be inclined to give money to someone actually down on their luck but I’m not giving shit to some loudmouth tweaker who’s probably going to come by my house later and steal my kid’s bike or commit identity theft on my elderly neighbors with zero remorse. These types of people are on the streets because they’ve burned every bridge in their life already. Addiction is a mental health issue but that doesn’t absolve everyone from the responsibilities of their actions. Some people can’t help themselves due to disabilities whether physical or mental and these people deserve help, but there’s a good segment of people who just don’t want to give up the life.

  • The federal government ended the the EV subsidy a few years ago.

Buyers of any EV not just American EVs.

lmao. We know what slavery looks like, you can see it in the cotton fields outside Angola Prison, rows of enslaved people, and overseer on a horse, all behind barbed wire.

I’m glad you find slavery so comical.

Were these inmates enslaved for their religious beliefs being different than the official party line? We they imprisoned for not wanting to be controlled by a dictatorship? No. No they weren’t.

Through 1 and 5 year plans, the CPC uses SoEs (and sometimes just asks private companies “nicely”) to ensure the foundational inputs, steel, rubber, chips, college graduates, etc are all available to industry at the specific price point and volume that competing private firms need to produce say, 100m EV or a million more apartments.

Gee, it sure sounds like you’re listing even more slavery than I mentioned. Imagine Trump declaring that every college grad needs to make themselves available to build a border wall.

Any country can do a little central planning to make sure private industry has what it needs, but this only works if you’re able to take action against companies that exploit the system.

The only exploitation mentioned here is the government exploiting the people. It seems your argument is based on your warped belief that if the US is committing atrocities than it’s okay for everyone else to do so, yet your examples are in stark contrast to what’s happening here. Your views are frankly quite disgusting and proof of how absurd the Chinese government’s propaganda arm is.
