  • I hear you but after my husband was laid off (along with thousands in his field in our area) he looked for months and months for a new job. Unfortunately so did the other thousands, so sometimes even with 6 or 8 interviews he wouldn’t get the job. One place ghosted him after THEY made an offer.

He’s an apprentice now in a trade. These two years are really tight with money, but we wish he had started up in the trade immediately instead of wasting all that time looking. We’d be surviving better on this low pay if we hadn’t had so many months of zero pay for him.

Obviously we need to support everyone and ableism is bad, but I wouldn’t want to get drafted which is basically a death sentence and then a guy who gets bring from A to B mixed up with bring from B to A is beside me with a loaded gun. I definitely wouldn’t want him behind me with that gun. To say that’s elitist is intentionally naive.

I agree we’re better off to cut out fast food, but…

How long are the drive thrus you get stuck in? I think the worst I’ve ever had was 20 minutes and it was because their registers were acting up. The simplest meal at home is definitely 20 minutes unless you’re literally only eating plain ramen or cereal. I mean I guess you can make an egg in less than 20 minutes, but that doesn’t count the time in the grocery store or dishes?

  • Yeah, the skinniest couple I know eats candy and taco bell all day long (they’re approaching 30 so that teen metabolism is long gone). They’re not unusually active or anything, just thin. My husband is thin and has basically zero regard for his diet. Southern amounts of butter on everything. I’m much more careful than him, I enjoy plain veggies as snacks (as opposed to his pastries) and I’m ten pounds more than him at 7 inches shorter than him.

  • We (me, spouse and 1 child) rent a big house with my grandmother who I care for. It’s 4 bedroom/2 bath, got a kitchen, living room, laundry room, a large dining room and extra living room that used to be a garage. It’s my parent’s place, while they live in an apartment for work.

The huge place is not worth it. I hate taking care of my grandmother. She has dementia and I’m burned out but we can’t afford to live anywhere else.

  • Yeah, people definitely don’t understand that you can cut so much and bargain hunt the whole thing and still spend 15-20k. That’s a"cheap" wedding. The average in my area is 33k. That’s not because people are just spending frivolously and don’t budget, that’s because every single aspect of a wedding is expensive. Hell, tipping out the bar staff and photographer alone is expensive.

Skip it if you want, but even as a very frugal person, I’m very happy we had a huge party with lots of food and an open bar. It’s worth it to spend money on life rites. Life rites are like half the point of being human!

If you don’t care about celebrating with friends and family, don’t spend the money, but for us sharing the day with the people we love and merging our families was important.

  • I think it’s funny you used cheeseits as your example because that’s one of the few things I won’t buy generic of because they’re just different. Little cookies, crackers, chips, and chocolates are usually brand specific in taste (though don’t assume you prefer the name brand, you may prefer the generic!) so they’re not fungible. I’d rather skip the calories than have generic cheeseits or Doritos.
