To remain sane in an insane world is merely the sign of a sick mind.

I’ve heard it as (and occasionally use myself),

Insanity is a sane response to an insane world.

I am insane because I am sane.

      We are not the same.

Every time I have to tell my psychiatrist that my meds “stopped working”, I ask myself if they really stopped working or if they’re just not doing enough because shit keeps getting worse and worse.

Most mental illnesses and almost all untreated illnesses are a result of wealth inequality.

I think the most suicidal I’ve ever been was when I was on sertraline. It dulls EVERYTHING. Orgasms was close to impossible, and if you got them: *ZAP* “icepick to the brain” kind of headache.
I get why a capitalistic society prescribes medicine like that willy-nilly, it’s easier to have zombies just doing their tasks than actually looking at the problems causing depression in the first place as OP’s meme hints at.

The only medicine that has actually helped get out of a depression spiral is an ego death dose of psilocybin. Ego death does something to you, like it’s a full brain reboot. You forget what trivial problems you have doing death circles in your mind, and you remember you’re part of nature.

Mind you, I’m not recommending shrooms, in fact I’m pretty scared of them even to this day. I’ve only taken bigger doses less than 10 times in my life as it’s definitely not a party drug.

      That sucks.

For me, sertraline helped me finally wake up and feel like myself again. (Plus buspirone for the sexual side effects and jaw clenching… which I guess could also be a sexual side effect if it happens at the wrong time.)

To be fair, since that time, which was probably close to 10 years ago, I’ve since found out that I have autism and ADD (diagnosed last year), and I’ve found that I’m quite sensitive to a lot of medicine, meaning it’s possible I was overmedicated on sertraline. Or maybe it’s the opposite, that because of my alexithymia, meaning the few feelings I had was dulled incredibly, and the other feeling I wasn’t feeling was turned to practically 0.

I’m very happy to hear that it helped you though. Where I live I doubt I’d had access to buspirone anyway.

i think that chemical imbalance exists and is real but is only the immediate cause of depression. if you dig deeper, in 90% of cases you will find that the chemical imbalance is itself caused by bad situation/ living conditions. so, both are correct. bad living conditions are the ultimate cause for most depressions, but also, chemical imbalances is what you can detect in the brain of patients with depression. but the chemicals are merely the mediators, not the cause of the depression.

It’s like saying pain is responsible for my legs hurting. It’s not a cause and claiming it is does a disservice to anyone with depression

It is not. Misunderstood concept still, apparently. There is some kind of information war going on.
