In 1958, a self-described 42-year-old kid named Robert Paul Smith penned a little book titled How to Do Nothing with Nobody All Alone by Yourself (public library), which his wife Elinor, an accomplished author herself, illustrated — a delightful field guide to hacking household objects and making mischievous contraptions from nature’s gifts, long before the rise of hacker culture and the modern Maker Movement.

Just learn the thing that no one wants to learn. It doesn’t need to be difficult to learn, it just needs to be the thing that no one wants to learn.

I had a job that felt like this sometimes, as a contractor for a federal gov’t agency, and I hated it. Be careful what you wish for…

I worked in a system development area years ago. It was an annual income tax system. The designers designed for about half a year; the build people made the code over an overlapping half a year; test tested the code over about half a year.

Whatever you did, you worked half a year, and were idle half a year

This was after the internet, but before we had internet to the desk. It was before smart phones, before cell phones

      It was terrible.

I have this. It’s called (mental) disability pay. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. But my dog loves my free time.
