  • It took me until the early 2020s to realize that men even have body washes in the first place.

Keep in mind that I abandoned broadcast TV around 2001 or 2002, so I completely cut all commercials out of my life.

Then when the first adblocker became available for Phoenix (later Firebird, then Firefox) around 2004, I was all over that like white on rice. So since 2004 the only ads I have had to suffer were when I set up a new system whose browsers needed configuring, and later once my browser protections became too strict and I needed a “naked” web browser for user-hostile sites that tied spyware and near-malware into site-critical functionality.

So I have been “out of the advertising loop” for a very long time, and always saw bodywash as a female thing. I quite literally never “got the memo” that body washes came for men.

And I’m not likely to get any, either. And not for any stupidly sexist reasons - after five decades on this rock, I am just habituated on bars of soap. I just don’t like the showering/soaping-up experience without bar soap.

  • When I was in my 20s, I would ask for two whole hands of jalapeños on a sub. Well, my catcher’s-mitt-sized hands, that is. Along with all the normal fixin’s. Like, the jalapeños would make up more than half of each sub’s non-bread contents.

And I would frequently eat two of these monstrosities in a single sitting.

I would often have the staff put more and more on because as Filipino ladies, their hands were tiny AF, and they couldn’t imagine eating subs like that. So they were always starting out with 10-20 slices scattered along the entire sub and I was like, “NO. Grab an entire fistful. As much as you can grab. Put that on one end. Then repeat three more times along the sub.”

I mean, I could likely still have that amount of jalapeños on a sub. But I would be stuffed after just one sub, these days. The hollow leg of my youth vanished during my fifth decade, and I’ve been inconsolable ever since.

  • Your data is still there for Reddit to monetize.

Overwrite all your old posts with a protest message. Wait a day. Repeat. Wait a week. Repeat. A month, repeat. Then delete shit. Going back to undelete a random post managed in this manner will be too costly for them.

Downside is that I have yet to find a script that actually catches everything. All the well-known scripts miss a lot, likely on account of their limitations.

  • Agreed. There are only three modern/common communications channels which are truly synchronous:

    1. In-person communication
    2. Phone calls
    3. Video calls

Everything else is asynchronous, and does not necessarily involve an interruption or a disruption of your time - you can get to it when you want to, within polite reason.

And with the fragmentation of our attention due to social media - to say nothing about the broader nature of our modern culture - being able to handle communication asynchronously is becoming very important to people.

most of them see the US as the Great Satan that is responsible for any and all evil in the world.

That’s throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

America is largely fine. The problem it has is a violently coercive economic model that forces people to be profitable to other people or risk destitution, homelessness, or even death by exposure, and a political system that is militaristic, imperialistic, and dysfunctional.

    My favourite quote is this:

America has three political groups, but is serviced by only two political parties - the extreme ChristoFascist right has a party all to themselves, while the moderate right and centrists share a party such that it cannot effectively function.

  • We don’t have anyone actively working on Windows support, […] We would like to do Windows eventually, but it’s not a priority at the moment.

As much as I applaud this focus on just one broad OS architecture, as it will greatly speed development, leaving out Windows is likely to cut off 85-90% of all early adopters. I just hope that the benefit of a simplified target will outweigh ignoring the vast majority of the market.

And honestly, methinks they should focus on Haiku OS before Windows, as it is closer to a Unix heritage than Windows is. And Haiku OS desperately needs a native modern web browser with all the bells and whistles.
