Russia's GPS jamming puts aviation, shipping at additional risk as well

Russian jamming of GPS signals has spread to Estonia and other nearby countries, posing further risks to both aviation and shipping. Generally speaking, GPS interference reduces positioning accuracy, however intense interference can cause GPS receivers to lose positioning information altogether.

Those reading this might be interested in this map, which uses airline ADS-B data to map GPS jamming.

Pretty interesting. I’m gonna take a wild guess that most of the low level (green) jamming is just plain old electromagnetic interference?

Really curious to know what’s going on over Poland. Found this article talking about it. Seems to think Russia is responsible which I suppose isn’t a surprise.

Yeah, it looks to me like this is mostly a map of gps noise, I would assume that only a fraction of it is intentional jamming. But it paints a pretty clear pattern, with the only large areas of heavy jamming being around Russia and the middle east (Israel, Jordan, Iraq, iran) and between Pakistan and India. All areas that have real concerns about being the target of gps guided nukes.

Extra fun when you learn that GPS/ADS-B technology was made public by the US because Russia shot down a commercial aircraft that wandered into their airspace in the 80s.

Can’t Ukraine just switch to GLONASS? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I don’t really know anything about satellites (just that my Garmin supports both).

Yeah, but aren’t they unlikely to jam GLONAS? Can they see people’s locations if they use it?

Positioning is passive, so nobody knows where you are. We also have beidiu and Galileo, but if you jam an area you jam them all I guess
